Building Connectivity and Fostering Economic Growth: Learnings from India’s National Highway Development Program
India’s economic growth over the past two decades has been significantly associated with investments in road infrastructure. The National Highway Development Program (NHDP), one of the world’s largest highway development programs, which was introduced in 1998, serves as a key driver of India’s economic growth. The NHDP was implemented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and consisted of multiple phases targeting the expansion, upgrading, and modernization of India’s national highway network. Its most iconic components include the Golden Quadrilateral and the North-South and East-West Corridor projects, which connected major metropolitan and economic centres across the country. This lecture explores the evolution, achievements, and lessons from the NHDP, focusing on how large-scale infrastructure investment can serve as a catalyst for economic growth and national connectivity.
